Pull-up Bar (Chin-up Bar)

A chin-up bar (also known as a pull-up bar) offers one of the most convenient workouts available because of its simple design and its effectiveness as an exercise.

Many resistance machines that are suitable for a home gym can be quite bulky and expensive. There are numerous machines available for a home based workout, but there are cheaper ways to get the same benefit of a commercial gym. For example, some people chose to walk or run on a treadmill while there are plenty or roads and trails available at no cost. Chin-up and pull-up bars offer the same money saving principle. Why invest in fancy machines when you can simply install a chin-up or pull-up bar in your own home. They can be bought new or used, or created from parts bought at a local hardware stores.

There are different ways of targeting different muscle groups so that the work-out may have a mix to it. Pulling yourself up with palms facing the body offers a different exercise targeting different muscles than one with the palms facing away from the body. Other variations might include straight legs or bent knees to target different abdominal groups. Breathing exercises can be included as well, which will maximize the benefit of the workout. Adding weights to your body will maximize strength training, and very similar to what a common weight machine at a gym has to offer.

Installation of a chin-up or pull-up bar is easy. There are options for ceiling installation, but it is simple enough to install in a doorway and can be kept completely out of everyone's way. Most store bought bars include brackets which are installed in the doorway, and offer easy placement of the bar. If installing the bar into a doorway with a door, make sure to install on the side in which the door swings away from. Make sure there is enough room. It is also wise to choose a doorway with little traffic or installing in a room with a television may not be a bad idea. It has been shown that workouts are longer when distracted. However; be sure to be giving it your all and not just watching television.

Space required for installing the bar is minor. Usually, the top of a doorway is out of the way of all household members, unless they are very tall. Removing the bar from the bracket is easy, and the bar can be stored in a closet or under the bed. This certainly offers more room than a costly machine. It is important to keep in mind when installing the bar the traffic use of the area. Although the bar is generally out of the way, your body will not be. You may have to schedule your workout around a time when family is resting or not home. If you live alone, any doorway should suffice.
